2024 April PAD Challenge: Day 14

This is the 2024 April Poem-A-Day Challenge. For today’s prompt, write an ekphrastic poem.

HUH??

(An ekphrastic poem is a poem inspired by a piece of art.)

Double Vision
This painting by Dosso Dossi
appeared twice like magic to me.
First in the Epoch paper here
Then, the Getty Museum, virtually.

"Allegory of Fortune," 'tis named.
Two naked figures are painted.
Gentleman Chance and Lady Fortune
And both their wiles are tainted.

Fortune holds a horn of plenty
But wears a single shoe.
On a fragile bubble, she's poised.
I'll not trust "Lady Luck," will you?

Lottery tickets clutched in his fist
That's what Sir Chance holds high.
All will be dropped in a silver pail, but
Only ONE wins in the number you buy.

But the joke's on us, this art was lost.
A hobbyist found it and you won't believe
He took a chance and paid one grand,
Then took it to Christie's, and did $4 million receive.
