Book Review: Yours, till Heaven

by Ray Rhodes Jr.

a mini audiobook review by Jackie Houchin

My heart is brimming with joy (and sadness) with thoughts from this truly romantic story – the love and marriage between Charles H. and Susie Spurgeon.

From when they first met and his desire to assure that she was saved before he proposed marriage, through the mountain tops and deep valleys of his ministry and each of their physical and mental sufferings, there runs the thread of true and sustaining love.

The marriage vows – “to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part” – were never taken so seriously and so willingly as those between Charles and Susie. How concerned he was for her happiness! How determined she was to support his ministry to the last drop off her strength.

Through letters, (the new style of) postcards, songs, declarations, precious tiny gifts, and overt praises to God, this couple proclaimed their feelings for each other a million times over. The quotes are thrilling. The beautiful writings of Susie Spurgeon at her husband’s death are bound to bring floods of tears to a listener’s (or reader’s) eyes.

Yours, till Heaven, The Untold Love Story of Charles and Susie Spurgeon, is surely a handbook on how a godly marriage should work for believers in Christ. I recommend that you read this for the pure strong romance it is, but also for the challenge of your own marriage – present or future.

Five stars.
