a Truth Whimsie by Jackie Houchin
A Whimsey by Jackie Houchin
What traits and likenesses have you inherited from your parents? Maybe a certain shaped nose or build, your height (or lack of), your skin, hair, eye color, a musical or artistic talent, an interest in mechanics or history, or a love of baking?
How about your short-sightedness (physical or emotional), short fuse (or long fuse), compliance or stubbornness?
I’ve inherited many of the above from my parents, and mostly I’m glad. But what I am amazed with – utterly shocked by – is my wonderful “alikeness” to my Heavenly Father.
Like me, God’s favorite color is BLUE. How do I know? Just look up. The massive, daytime, over-reaching dome above us (minus any clouds) is BLUE. And if you are fortunate to live near one of the earth’s great oceans, you will see that BLUE – perhaps in a deeper tone – reflected there. Yes, my Father’s favorite color is BLUE.
Born in May, my birthstone is an EMERALD. I think maybe my second favorite color is Green (and God does use quite a bit of that color in His good earth). I have a couple tiny emerald stones in a necklace and a ring. But the throne of God – my Heavenly Father – is completely encircled with a rainbow whose dominate color is EMERALD.
Revelation 4:2-3
At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.
My Father has given me a love of reading and writing. Guess what word picture He gave as a name for His Son – the WORD. Check out…
John 1:1 and 14.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
I love STORIES, especially mysteries. Jesus revealed great truths and mysteries in the many word-stories (parables) He used in His teaching. “The Kingdom of God is like seed that the farmer sows, like a treasure buried in a field, like a pearl of great price. (Matthew 13)
Or God’s love is like a shepherd searching for the one in a hundred “lost sheep,” or the woman sweeping her house to find a single missing coin. God’s great mercy and forgiveness are shown in the story of a father welcoming home his prodigal son. (Luke 15:3-24)
Other of his amazing STORIES are about wise and foolish people – building their homes on rock or sand and then waiting out a storm. (Matthew 7:24-27)
Jesus told a cautionary STORY about a rich landowner who kept building bigger barns to store the huge amount of grain God had blessed him with, telling himself to “eat, drink, and be merry.” He died that very night. (Luke 12:15-21) And then the one about a very poor widow who her gave her last half-penny for the work of the Lord, and then went home starving but joyous. (Luke 21:1-4)
And how about the good Samaritan who found and helped an enemy, and then provided all that he needed to recuperate. (Luke 10:30-37) Jesus asked, ” WHO is neighbor to that poor man?” referencing the second greatest commandment to Love your “neighbor” as yourself.
STORIES. (sigh) I love them!
Oh, and what about those prophets of old? Many messages from God came to (and through) them in the form of STORIES. Think of Ezekiel’s valley of dry bones “connecting” together to live again! Whoa!! (Ezekiel 37:1-10)
Or what about his sci-fi vision of the glory of the LORD – I mean, try picturing THAT in your mind! (Ezekiel 1:4-28). (Stand aside Jules Vernes, Ray Bradbury, H. G. Wells!)
And one last thing….
I love to TRAVEL, anywhere and everywhere, any town, any continent. The farther the better. And what does my Lord and Savior say to me?
“GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL TO THE WHOLE CREATION!” Mark 16:15. WOW!!!!!!
I wish there were other ways I was like my Heavenly Father. His love and patience and mercy and grace and forgiveness. His holiness, unchangeableness, and faithfulness.
Romans 11:33
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
But he’s promised me, as His child, whom He foreknew that I am predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son (Jesus Christ). Wow. To be totally like Jesus. It won’t completely happen until the end, but I can trust God that each hard lesson I learn, each trial or persecution, each twist of suffering, is making me more and more like Him.
1 John 3:2-3
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we SHALL BE LIKE HIM, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
What more could I ask? I’m a kid of the Creator, the child of a King. And I’ve be promised an eternity with Him.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have ETERNAL life.
Philippians 3:20-21
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Wouldn’t you like to be His kid too?
