BOOK REVIEW – Dear Mrs. Bird, The Emmeline Lake Chronicles, book 1

by AJ Pearce (Author), Anna Popplewell (Narrator), Simon & Schuster Audio (Publisher)

An Audiobook Review by Jackie Houchin

I very much enjoyed this historical novel set in the middle of WWII in Great Britain. DEAR MRS. BIRD is about the war efforts that those at home took part in to support the soldiers and sailors – often some of their own relatives – who were away fighting. It’s about them trying to live in the middle of air raids and bombings and the injury and loss of loved ones.

Protagonist Emmiline and best friend Bunty (sp?) encourage each other in their dreams and nightmares and issues of the heart.

Emiy’s dream is to be a war correspondent, but she found herself instead in the magazine office of the newspaper where “advice letters” are answered. Or NOT answered! How she crosses the line to reach out to hurting people, and the consequences she faces is a big part of the story.

The tragic – horrendous – event that nearly severed the relationship between her and her very best friend fills in the remainder of the novel.

AJ Pearce brings the other characters and events to life realistically, making this book a well-researched deep dive into history. I am so glad there are two more books in this series. l. I want to know more about those brave and caring advice writers and to see if a romance (or two) that started in this book will blossom.
