Leslie Leyland Fields‘ story of life as a fisherman’s wife on Kodiak Island in Alaska and raising 6 children to be fishermen is astonishing, eye opening and mind boggling.

On the practical side I will never be able to cook or eat a salmon filet without thinking of the tremendous struggle, hard work, and sacrifice she and her family put out, season after season, year after year, to deliver these beautiful, delicious silver, pink, or red fish. Wow.

Battling storms, hauling in empty nets, mending torn and ragged nets; what a hard life! One horrible night, mountainous waves and strong winds made it almost impossible to drag in the nets. Arms and backs were straining, water was knee high in the boat… and Leslie had a miscarriage. She went to clean up and then back out in the dark alongside the men to pull the catch in, knowing and grieving that a life had just been lost.

Fields writes about captivating, heart-wrenching, and wondrous incidents in her life. But intertwined through her Alaska story, she tells of a solo visit to Israel and her hike around the Sea of Galilee.

The fascinating people she meets, and the sights and experiences she has, are threaded through with Bible stories about Jesus and his disciples, especially those who were fishermen. She identifies with them, learns from them, and learns from Jesus’ dealing with them – His gentleness, His sternness, but mostly His love. At 57 years old, she is facing a crucial turning point in her life. As she reads the Gospels, sees where Jesus lived and taught those twelve men, she finds Him just as willing to teach her.

CROSSING THE WATERS brought me joy, tears, insight, chuckles, gasps, and a touch of that perfect heavenly love.  I highly recommend it.  And Pamela Klein narrated so well; it was if the author was telling her own story.
