“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19
Then Sings My Soul
St. Patrick (born Maewyn Succat) was an evangelist to Ireland. He’d been kidnapped from his home in Scotland by raiders when he was 16. He was enslaved by them, but gave his life to Jesus while there. Eventually, he escaped. But God called him back to his captors with the message of Jesus Christ. His preaching was powerful, and multitudes came and heard and were converted.
An unknown Irishman penned a poem 400 years later, asking God to be HIS VISION.
In 1905, the Irish poem was translated into English and set to a traditional Irish folk song from the area where St. Patrick preached the Gospel.
.
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
‘Naught be all else to me save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
.
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
.
High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.
