BOOK REVIEW – Being Ethel: (In a world that loves Lucy) (Mackinac Island Stories, 1 of 6)

by Michele Olson (Author, Narrator, Publisher)

An audiobook review

I love everything about Being Ethel (in a world that loves Lucy): short, clean, funny, and a bit of mystery and romance.  And set on Mackinac Island, where they are filming “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve.  AND more old movie and TV show references than you can believe, very appropriately placed.  Laugh out loud fun at times.
The series (of six books) was recommended to me by the author, Michele Olson.  I thought right away that another friend would enjoy it because she and Piper (the main character) both love old Hollywood movies. I bought her a copy.  Then, I had to buy a copy for myself so we could talk about it.  Very soon, I was immersed in the fun.  “I” laughed and loved Piper Penn myself!  Her problems always seemed offset by her fun quotes from old movies and her letter-journaling to long-gone movie stars, appropriate for the situation she found herself in.  So clever!

Then she moved to Mackinac Island and, surprise, surprise!  Besides the mystery and the movie memories, a sweetness and a lovely learning about the Bible and Jesus began… from a very unexpected new friend.  Sure, it seemed Piper’s problems were multiplying, but God was looking after her and…

Well, you must read this uplifting, funny, at times mysterious, divine, and squeaky-clean romantic comedy, straight out of I Love Lucy.
PS: The author does a very good reading of the book, too!
