DEADLY DECEPTION is one of Hope Callaghan’s earlier books about Millie Sanders, a very spry and athletic widow who works on the cruise ship Siren of the Seas.  Her exotic adventures (and the mysteries she solves with her growing gang of friends) are exciting and fun to read.  They are also a fill-in for those of us who love cruising, during the long months between our own adventures on the High Seas.

In this book, Millie is in charge of a feisty, biligerant performer on board, who needs protection from… well, a number of things, including a possible murderer.  Millie, who usually is in charge of guest services, fun games, and parties, finds herself stuck like Elmer’s glue to this slippery blond beauty.  Except Ariana keeps disappearing! Even when Millie sleeps on a very uncomfortable cot in the actress’s room, she manages to “get away.”  How can Millie “protect” her when she can’t even find her?

It gets worse when the ship docks and Ariana goes ashore for excursions. Both times, she slips Millie, who is in a panic to find her… hopefully still alive.  What in the world is this gal up to?  Why is she so fascinated with the Mayan ruins in Mexico? What is in her ‘fanny pack’ she guards?   Much to Millie’s dismay, she is soon also in the crosshairs of the killer!

Because this is only #4 in the series, Millie is just beginning her romance with the ship’s captain, whom (SPOILER ALERT!) she will later marry.  This part of the series is soooo fun!  But then, they ALL are, for cruise-loving souls like me.

PS: These books are uber clean. In fact, Hope takes every opportunity to have Millie pray, think of a Bible verse, or recall something the onboard pastor has said.  I love it!
