BOOK REVIEW – Lightning Strikes the Silence: A Lane Winslow Mystery, Book 11

by Iona Whishaw (Author), Marilla Wex (Narrator), TouchWood Editions (Publisher)

An Audiobook

Lightning Strikes the Silence by Iona Whishaw is another deliciously intriguing and comfortable mystery set in British Columbia, Canada, in the late 1940’s. These addictive books feature the super-sharp (British ex-spy) Kate Winslow, who is now married to Police Inspector Frederick Darling. (Yes, that’s his name.  It’s use gets funny at times!)

“Miss Winslow,” as she still is called, has a penchant for finding bodies.  And this book is no exception. But this time, she also finds a little, injured Japanese girl who can’t speak. It turns out that much of the story revolves around her.

Meanwhile, Inspector Darling is trying to figure out who robbed a local jewelry store and killed its owner.  His verbal interplay with his Seargant Ames is really funny at times!

Author Whishaw does meticulous research of the time, place, and all the intricacies of the story.  The treatment of the Canadian Japanese during and following the war is a big part of this story’s background.

King’s Cove, where Kate and now Inspector Darling live, is full of loving and helpful (to a fault sometimes) neighbors, whom you grow to love as you read through the series.  They are always eager to hear about Kate’s investigations and then help her in any way needed.

I very much enjoy reading this series.  Up next is #12, followed by a short sequel book about Kate’s life in the UK during the War.  I’ll be sorry to see it end.
