BOOK REVIEW – Echo Island

by Jared C. Wilson (Author)

An audiobook for 7-12 grade kids.

This book begins in the normal world of Washington State. Four high-school graduates (Bradley, Archer, Jason, and Tim) finish a weekend campout (the last one before they split and head for colleges) and start home, back to Echo Island.  The ferryman seems a bit strange, but they shrug it off.  However, they soon realize that everything in their world is radically changed.

Their town is deadly quiet.

There are no people or animals; no life of any kind except themselves. There is no electricity and nothing works. Their phones and their parent’s cars are useless.  And no one in their families has left a note or explanation of any kind.  Confusion, fear, bravado, or optimism is shared among the friends.

They check everywhere for clues. Bradley even takes a kayak and tries to row back to the mainland to get help, but…  he returns confused. and scared.  There are deep moaning noises they don’t understand.  And a wraith-like vision in the fog.

The boys see smoke coming from a cabin in the middle of a dark forest and go to explore. There they learn some fantastical, unearthly things. And there is a clever transition that readers will greet with open mouths.

This is an edge-of-your-seat tale, spookier as you read. And then REALLY scary. They all are trapped in a deep secret.  Will any of them make it out …. or somewhere?
