An Audiobook
Alexander Maclaren‘s book about the Bible character, David, using his Psalms to tell the story, is eye-opening and amazing. I confess, as I listened to the book, I wished I had a print copy to follow along with each of the Psalms. (Maybe I’ll pick up a copy!) Or… maybe I’ll listen again with my Bible open to that big, wonderful middle book of Psalms.
Some of them are obviously about David’s early life or the years he fled from the murderous King Saul. Psalms 51 and 32 are also clearly from the time he sinned with Bathsheba and the guilt he felt afterward.
But in his later life, I got a glimpse of an illness that I had not seen before and his lingering despair over his sin as he endured the discipline of the LORD. Only one psalm covers his old age, but I saw a renewal of his faith in it.
I recommend this book for people who know the history of Israel and their greatest king, David – a man after God’s own heart. I also urge anyone who does NOT know the Bible well, to read this book. It will entice you to, at the very least, spend some time in the Psalms, and maybe take you back into the history as well.
Well written, and read by the narrator.
