Elizbeth Speller’s historical fiction book, THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN EMMETT is a caring but tragic story exposing a mystery of heartache and loss. Soldiers of the “Great War” reluctantly tell their stories to a man who simply wants to discover what happened to one soldier … for the sake of his sister. But as Laurence Bartram seeks out witnesses and information the story gets darker.
Such a loss and waste of a generation of young, brave, and hopeful British men is hard to read at times, but Speller’s writing is compelling and sensitive. You have to read on and gather the details with Bartram to make sense of it all. Just be willing to grieve a bit as you go. It’s actually worth it to get to the ending, especially the epilogue.
