An Audiobook review

Ashley Weaver‘s fourth Electra McDonnell mystery continues the espionage story set in London during WWII. It features the handsome Major Gabriel Ramsey and the wily, beautiful ex-cat burglar “Ellie” McDonnell.  They always seem to defy capture and win the day, except “the day” is not over, and it’s getting ever so much more dangerous.

This time, several burglaries in wealthy homes are reported in the newspaper and, they catch Ellie’s eye. Her family used to be among the best in this type of criminal effort before agreeing to work for the government, and she’s curious. She learns that Major Ramsey also has this new group under his radar as well, and they agree to work together again.

She approaches a crime boss from her former days to get a tip, which soon pays off, and her safe-cracking uncle infiltrates the group.  The “object” this group seeks is also essential to Major Ramsey and the war effort, so Ellie is once again put in danger in a very glamorous way. However, as usual, things go awry.

More fascinating than the spy/subterfuge parts of the story is the fiery romantic attraction between Electra and the Major. They MUST separate for their work’s sake, but the war intensifies, and they NEED to work together. Can they do it without letting the attraction interfere? The Major thinks not, but…

I enjoyed the book and can’t wait for the next in the series. It is definitely a well-researched and addicting series.
