An Audiobook Review

The Bones Remember is another fascinating, suspenseful adventure into the wild parts of New Zealand with forensic “teeth” specialist Alexa Glock. She’s an American on a work visa stationed at a forensics lab in Auckland.  She is called out to a remote island to identify a months-old corpse of a hunter who it’s believed shot himself.  While checking out the peculiarities of this scene, another call comes in about a fresh corpse on a nearby beach, the victim of a shark attack. Alexa is taken there as this is the more immediate body needing identification. It’s a gruesome sight.

Playing into the story are the fiery protests of the island locals about the new tourist-hyped attraction of cage diving to see Great White sharks up close. Locals say it’s bringing the sharks into waters where they fish, dive for shellfish, and swim.  This body is another reason for protests to flare up.

As Alexa examines the bodies and takes part in the autopsies, a strange fact emerges. The unexpected ballistic evidence points to both the hunter and the shark victim as being murdered.  Teeth impressions identify the two men, and the police search begins.

Being older and of a certain mindset, Alexa disobeys direct orders not once but three times, putting herself in dire jeopardy. As a horrific storm approaches the tiny island and all communication is gone, Alexa tries one more thing. It probably will get her killed.

This is a great mystery, with cool facts about sharks and whales and the raw aspects of autopsies. It also has a couple really terrifying action scenes.

Good writing, Sara E. Johnson, and voicing the story, Sarah Naughton.
