An Audiobook review
Benedict Brown’s characters in all his books. including The Hurtwood Village Murders, are well-drawn and consistent. I like Marius’s often self-effacing attitude, especially with Bella, but also his curious and quick comebacks. I enjoy how Brown writes pet dogs into the stories, giving them character and sometimes having them help in the investigation…in a doggy sort of way. Haha.
The mystery is wonderfully twisted in its unfolding, with the present-day threat of the poison pen letters and the references and deeds of the pre-war past. I have to admit, I didn’t have a clue to the letter writer or killer. Rather, I DID have a clue, but it was the wrong one!
Almost as enjoyable as the novel, is Brown’s chapter(s) of historical research notes after the ending. I really look forward to these in his books. They add color, humor, and interesting facts.
George Blagden is an outstanding narrator. However, his voicing of Marius in this series is just like Christopher in the Lord Edgington books. And any old Duke or Earl in these books sounds like Lord E. himself! Funny, but I don’t mind at all. He’s such a good reader.
