BOOK REVIEW – The Book Swap (Tales of Meadley, 1)

by Liz Hedgecock (Author)

A Book review by Jackie Houchin

THE BOOK SWAP by Liz Hedgecock, is a fun, sweet, feel-good novella about a newly single mom who is very unsure of herself, and her little girl, who is not.

Becca thinks she can make some friends at her daughter’s new school by joing the PTA. But everybody there seems so qualified and capable – things that Becca is not. Still, at the end of the evening when everyone else has an important job to do, Becca gets assigned to a small afterthought-of-a-job. She is to take care of their community Book Swap until the regular woman who does it recovers from surgery.

(Note: a Book Swap in the UK is what is called a Little Free Library in the US. In this case it is housed in an old fashioned, iconic, red, telephone booth.)

Becca resigns herself to the job, and sets about cleaning and sorting the disused and smelly Book Swap encouraged along the way by her daughter, Ellie and Ellie’s classroom.  In the process, which is a bit daunting, discouraging, and downright mysteriousat at times, Becca gains confidence and meets a host of new friends.

The Book Swap is a quick read not to be missed, especially since there is a companion novella titled THE POSTBOX TOPPER, set in the same small town of Meadley.
