An AUDIOBOOK review by Jackie Houchin
Whispers in The Reading Room is a sweet “Cinderella’ type story by the prolific historical romance writer, Shelley Grey. In it, a bespeckled young librarian falls for a handsome gentleman who shows up weekly in her “reading room.” And it seems he returns the interest. He defends her, woos her, helps her desperate situation financially. (Wow, let’s stop here! But no.)
Slowly Lydia discovers that her knight in shining armor has a dark side. At first it excites her. Then a murder occurs, followed by an attack by a gang of thugs. It becomes a rude awakening for them both.
But remember… Cinderella! And the glass slipper.
A secondary story of attraction runs alongside the story of Lydia and Sebastian, but in the background. And you will cheer them as much as you do the main characters. All ends well and I was looking for the follow up story in Book 4.
Whispers in The Reading Room is an enjoyable tale set in Chicago in the late 1800’s. The narration is excellent.
