BOOK REVIEW – A Peculiar Combination

by Ashley Weaver (Author), Alison Larkin (Narrator), Dreamscape Media, LLC (Publisher)

An Audiobook Review by Jackie Houchin

The way that Ellie McDonnell got roped into secret service for England during WWII in Ashley Weaver’s historical mystery, was clever and unusual. And she was exactly perfect for what they needed! Brave, loyal, talented in unique ways, daring, and beautiful. Did Major Gabriel Ramsey know what a hot item he had coerced, er, I mean, enlisted? And did he know he got her talented family along with her?

This was an enjoyable, lighthearted (if you can say that about war) espionage romp through the upper echelons of British society with two people on opposite sides of the law fighting for a shared national cause. Ellie and her Uncle Mick, professional safe-crackers, get nabbed one night, in what later they learn was a set up. Go to prison, or help God and Country?  It wasn’t a hard choice, but Ellie made it as difficult as she could for the stern, but oh, so handsome, Major. Hey, isn’t all fair in love and war?

As their schemes get thwarted one after another, there is a final dangerous plan, but can the two of them work it? Exciting to the suspenseful end! And…. I’m happy to report, there are at least two more books in the series to continue this “peculiar” duo’s secret dealings. .
