BOOK REVIEW – A Street Cat Named Bob: How He Saved My Life

An Audiobook

I so enjoyed “A Street Can Named Bob” by James Bowen.  It’s the lovely story of two strays on the streets of London coming together in mutual need, love, and care.

James lives as a penniless drug addict, having run from home at an early age. When we meet him, he is “maintaining” his life with a milder drug he gets daily at a clinic and earning just pocket change with his guitar and a few songs. Bob is an injured, scrappy street cat needing care. Both need “a cause” to live for and gradually, painfully, sweetly, they become the perfect fit.

First, Bob gets the medical attention he needs from James, his ever-watchful “parent.”  Later, when James decides to go “cold turkey,” Bob is there as a tender companion.

The cat and man become a team on the streets, and James gets noticed (in good and bad ways) and is missed when he’s not there. People love Bob and show it by filling the donation can with coins (and sometimes with pet treats and toys!).  But when a dog attacks and Bob disappears, James’ life begins to spiral down.

This amazing story tells how their bond became strong amid harrowing experiences, abuse from others on the streets, and an unbreakable need for each other. Loving someone and being loved back is the key.

“A Street Cat Named Bob” is a very hopeful (and suspenseful at times) story. You will love it, especially if you adore cats, like me.

The narrator for this audiobook does a spectacular job.
